When Michelle is not writing, teaching, or working on public history projects she spends some of her free time making beaded jewelry. She has always engaged in crafts from the time she was young, learning how to knit, crochet, collage, macrame, latch hook and needlepoint. In adulthood she learned film, video and photography techniques.
Always a fan of handmade work, Michelle was an art fair enthusiast who sought one-of-a-kind earrings. In 2002, she decided to make her own earrings, then learned how to make bracelets and necklaces. She immediately started experimenting with different combinations of materials and techniques, which includes wire wrapping, stringing, and weaving.
She uses quality materials including gold-filled and pure silver metals, along with semi-precious gem stones, various pearls, unique glass beads and more. She loves incorporating interesting clasps to add to the uniqueness of the designs--no two are alike.
Her work has been sold in Chicago-area boutiques and she has occassionally participated in art fairs.
